These are photos of our disneyland trip. We went to the happiest place on earth for NYE. For those who don’t know Disneyland on NYE is one of the busiest days of the year. I know you may have seen the video that I posted a couple weeks ago that contain these photos. But these are the special ones that I thought were cool enough to show on their own.

Home movie #4 consists of about 900 photos from our day at Disneyland on NYE. It was a great day. The weather was perfect, the crowds were amusing, and the excitement was all around us. As we anxiously waited for midnight to strike we took full advantage of all the rides the park had to offer. I even got us a seat at the romantic Blue Bayou restaurant that is inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. woot! When the fireworks came the fog had already taken over the sky, causing the light to spread and the sky to turn every color imaginable. It was incredible.

Hey Guys, Some of you may know that I went to Montreal to speak at the Montreal International Games Summet (MIGS). While I was there I gave a presentation on how we at Idle Games use Toon Boom’s Harmony animation software as a tool to bring our game, Idle Worship, to life.

A Visit From the Goon Squad.

I finished this book on the last day of the OutsideLands Music Festival in San Francisco. I only have a bit to say about it. -

Utterly amazing. We live with music; It’s in our pockets and more importantly it lies in our veins, like it or not. Now with this book, it transcends past our eardrums and into our eyes and reaches the skies. The last chapter was a tour de force, A stroke of Genius that pulled my strings and my attention like watching Arcade Fire at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music festival in August. Anyone that has been to an amazing live concert and feels that their lives are different after having experienced it, will feel the same after reading this book. Thank you.

Here is some very strange animation I did last night. I just wanted to play around and starts something of my own.

Here’s what I had in mind. When I took a C++ class in high school the instructor gave us every programmers first assignment - “Hello World”. They object is to produce the output of “Hello world” Onto the screen. It seems like an easy task. but trust me I couldn’t do it today if my life depended on it. the lesson has stuck though. Everyone has to start somewhere. I wonder if Mark Z. had to do that for an assignment ever? Well, I wanted to say “hello world” in my own way.

This video is the start of a simple project of 21 creatures sitting in 21 orange chairs saying hello 21 different ways.

But for now…. there is only 2. More to come. So stay tuned. :)

If time could tell us something about us that we don’t know, what would it say? Who knows? I sure don’t.   But is it even something I want to find out?    Actually, yes, I would like to know more about myself. And I would like for others to know more about me too. More specifically, my close family and friends, and even more specifically maybe some future little people of my own.

So what I decided to do was create series of home videos. Home videos like the ones that my dad used to make with his big camcorder. My dads videos became more than just the sum of their parts. They are more than plastic VHS tapes and more than just a family. Those home videos are golden. Like Steve Jobs said, “you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” These are golden dots in time, that I or my kids will open up years down the road and look at how far we’ve all come. We will be able to connect the dots and hopefully find some truly amazing things within ourselves.

This project is a sort of never ending one. But one that can come to mean more and more as time goes on. This project will come to show who I am and who I want to be, and even who I have grown to not be. These videos tell no story but are edited with a song in a fairly abstract way. Just me, my iphone 4, and life. Come on this ride and take a look at my first home movie.

I’m just sitting in a busy San Francisco coffee shop. My headphones are on and i’m editing the day away. The sun is shining bright on this wonderful saturday afternoon. Everyone has a hustle. Noon 30 Is mine. That’s what you call the Summertime Grind. :)

Speaking of Noon 30 Productions - Darryl and I are now a Legit Partnership. We have signed the paperwork and our awaiting our tax ID number. So if you are in the bay area and need Photography, film, or animation completed let us know. We are currently in full production mode but are definitely looking to expand and fill our future schedules.

Oh Man, I Just did a Tumblr search for english bulldogs. I normally don’t post this type of stuff but i am doing so for 2 reasons. The first is that this dog is undeniably cute. And his expression change here is so adorable.

The second reason is how AWESOME this is a animation reference. Seriously there is a really nice mix of big and subtle movements here. There is the big action of his expression changing from a curious or excited face to a confused and perplexed face. I mean watch the jaw coming up… when it eases into the closed position it slowly pushes out and up the surrounding cheeks and jowls. Theres also the ears and how they come up at different rates, one moving just slightly faster and higher then the other. And they EYES… oh man the eyes say it all. You can see if you look closely how the dogs right eyebrow moves up and sort of “causes” the other one to move ever so slightly, down in reaction. Then slowness at the end really shows how this dogs cogs turn. He’s really thinking. REALLY! There you have it, Animation GOLD.

Wow, I guess this means I’m an animation nerd.

Music video art show

Hey Guys,

I am a part of a SUPER art show that opens TONIGHT in HOLLYWOOD. It’s called “My Music Video art Show” . 100+ artists’ work based on Music Videos at Gallery Meltdown (Hollywood, CA), reception is 8pm-12am.

I did a piece based on Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights” Video. It is an acrylic piece. I know, I know, I don’t paint that often but when i do I always have a good time. But anyways this is a great show put on by Chris Marrs Piliero. He is the guy that directed the “tighten up” Music video by the black keys. He asked me personally to be in this show and I could not pass it up.

Take a look at the OFFICIAL press release from MTV. It’s gonna be a blast. If you are in LA or in Hollywood, it’s a MUST. Have a great time and make sure to check out my Piece on kanye west.

Inspiration can most definitely come from relaxation. When I drew these I was lounging by the pool in Lake Tahoe. I had been busy with work and putting out animating in the nude that time had gotten pretty sparse. So when I got to Tahoe for my Cousin’s Bachelor Party I took it not only as a time to celebrate, but also as a time to relax. I was inspired to draw balloons from a certain quote I heard on Kendrick Lamar’s “Celebraton” song. Listen to it above.

Here we are, another day, another page of the Valentines Sketch book. Here I was just trying to keep with the theme of the text on the page. Plus, who doesn’t like seeing the female figure?

Drawing a page so that it feels good together as a whole is something that I have been striving to do for a very long time. It happens for me one in a while where I feel like the page as a whole feels like it just “works”. Not only filled with good drawings but that the composition and rhythm are working together with the drawings to give them a better platform to be on. If things can feel like they flow well or draw they eye in a clear and concise direction then i feel I have done a good job. Like I said, not every page works out. And you will see that sometimes I fail miserably at it. This page happened to turn out OK. Definitely not a great example of what i am talking about but…OK

San Francisco. Life is grand. Life is beautiful.

Here I am now looking back at these drawings that I did a couple months ago. I remember it all, the bus i took and where I was going, the people i saw, and what made me want to draw them. Things in this life are temporary. Nothing is permanent, so we must make the memories last forever in our minds. When I draw these people on the fly like this it makes me remember not only what I was drawing or who I was looking at, but also it makes me remember the person I was when I did the drawings. If we all evolve everyday as we should, then it is nice to look back on how you have grown as a person. Now looking back you may or may not see some big changes, but in my case and in my point in time, there is a lot going on. I think that I have grown to be a better person in the last few months and it feels great to be able to have so many big things in the works. I am very grateful for it all and ready to take on any challenges that may come my way. Today, when I go out and draw I will remember this day and mark this moment in time for myself. I won’t forget the things I have done, the places I have been, and most of all the people that have let me be me. That includes all the people I have drawn to this day.

Hi Guys!

There is lots to talk about and lots to upload. Obviously upon looking there is a new blog. I stopped updating this blog a while back but noticed that i just keep coming back to it. I was using a tumblr as my blog. Now I think I will use both. I hope it is all up and working now. If not, please let me know.

But check this out: My goal here for the move was to simplify things for me. When I was using blogger I had a site for different categories (animation, sketches, portfolio…etc. ) I wanted to leave this categorizing stuff alone. When it really comes down to it, everything in my life is one constant stream. It doesn’t fit into little boxes. Everything that I do inspires something else. Whether it be my thoughts and words, photos I take, or drawings and animation, it all is just ME. So here I want things to flow more. I want the freedom to do anything I want. I will still tag things so that you can do an easy search (above) But I just want it all in one place. I hope you understand.

It will take me a while to get new drawings and animations scanned in and uploaded but I will start to post here more regularly. Here is a sneak peak at a piece I have been working on for a friend.

Starting a small new project that I have to finish within the next couple weeks so it heres the first in the series of Girls on Bicycles. I did something similar a while back for the Art Crank Poster show. But I think this is a progression of the same style. I learned some things last time and now I cleaned up and used marker a bit differently. I hope you guys dig it.

Heres something old. Now I think this is from about 6 months ago... never got around to posting it. But Looking back now, I know where I stand as an artist in its own respect. An artist never stops learning, Or studying for that matter. Compelled by forces unknown, at times I find myself staying up on nights like this and studying. By studying I mean drawing furiously in my sketchbook for the sole purpose of gaining an understanding on a certain subject. Sometimes, on nights like this, I actually start to understand more about myself. These nights are priceless and pure, a moment of clarity for myself. Thanks for taking the time to read... So here we are. FInally coming to a wrap with a few of the projects that I have been working on after work.There lots of things going on and lots more to do (as always). But forge on I must. I remeber someone telling me that when one door closes another one opens. I feel the same about the projects that I work on. When one finishes up, that makes time for another. Never stop the hustle!

Fist off I am pleased to say that I was invited top take part in the "Leftovers Lounge" Anthology With some friends of mine. Our first publication will make its premier at Wondercon on April 2nd. (which I hope you all are going to attend!) . Heres the cover to the book. Art done by Guilluermo Martinez and Joao. Every one did an outstanding job with their stories. YOu can see a sample of mine below. But if you wanna see the whole thing,....then you should stop by at wondercon!

Speaking of wondercon - April 2nd to April 4th. Ill be there selling some of the NEW "Leftovers lounge" books and of course "Sketch or Die". My booth number is D12.

Fresh new cintiq

Hey guys! So I'm really concentrating on a couple things right now an work is one of them. The others are animation and the convention season coming up. To help me with all of this I purchased a new cintiq. And I must say that this product is definitely worth every penny. It's amazing what the difference is compared to a tablet. The feeling of pen and paper has never been duplicated an most likely never will.... But the ciniq comes damn close!

Leftovers LOUNGE! Some amazing students at the Academy of art are putting together a collaborative project. The end product will be a book of great stories written and illustrated by some talented folks here in the animation department of the school! So I know many of you have heard of character design from life from people like Stephen Silver, Mark McDonnell, and Mike Mattesi. These guys have it down!~

Simply put, when a model is in front of you, create a character from it. Create a story for it to live in and keep drawing that character for every pose your model decides to go into. This can be done with a clothed, or a nude model. Its all about what you see and what moves you about the model.

So Heres a series of drawings from life. Character was my number one goal and of course putting the force and rhythm into it as well.

THis Guy is a concept for an upcoming Project Im working on with some friends of mine over at TES Clothing . They are Great guys, and Im really excited about the product Im working on with them.

These are just me having fun!

So I know Its been A couple weeks. I had a tough time getting back on track after the vacation. The stupid cough has been with me since I got back and I think its only barely starting to let go. Ah well. When I got back I hit up a zoo and have been working hard on some animation. My Thesis Project has also been keeping me busy.

Euro Trip Sketches!

Whew,

Time definitely flies when your having fun! I was on vacation in Europe for just over 2 weeks and drew over 60 pages in my sketchbook!

Everything was so inspiring, from the people on the cruise I was on to the monuments in Rome and Turkey that I saw. It really opened my eyes and made me appreciate what I do and how I can take a little bit of something and make it my own in my sketch book. It also made me want to really look at where I live (San Fran! ) In a new way. I mean, Theres so much to see where you live...just open your eyes and look harder!

Hello everybody!

So Ape was a blast! Thanks to everyone who came and supported me and bought either a book, print or an original. Its always so humbling to see tons of great work under one roof.

Also-
While I was at APE Bill Robinson let me know about a great event thats going on very soon. The Purrcasso art and Craft Sale will take place in Berkeley an Saturday November 7th and 8th.
There will be a silent Auction of dog and cat related artwork. The piece that I am submitting is below. Let me know what you guys think!

Also While I was at APE I painted an acrylic piece for a friend of his girlfriend in a yoga pose. Im starting to feel more comfortable with acrylics everyday! Below is a sample of the piece I did for Ben. Also Here are the larger images of the bikers on the poster. Enjoy....phew...long post!

APE and Art Crank!!

Just wanted to let you guys know about a few things!

First of all this Weekend is the San Francisco Alternative Press Expo. (APE) Ill have a booth there and have a ton of stuff for you guys to check out! Skateboards, prints, originals, and of course my book "Sketch or Die". So Stop by and visit buy some cool art and say hello! Ill be at booth 462!

Next news item on the list - Ill be a featured artist at San Francisco's ART CRANK Bike Poster Show. Below is my submission to the show. It had to be a bike theme (of course), but aside from that I could do whatever I wanted. It was actually tons of fun to do. I created them separately ( you can see the originals framed above) in marker on paper.

Come on over to the Chrome bag store on 4th st at 7:00 pm on October 24th. Its gonna be a blast!! Sadly I wont be there...Ill be in Europe that night. But The posters will be pre-signed and numbered for your convenience. ALso they will be exclusive to this event, so if you like them then you had better be there on the 24th!

So thanks to a blog post by Mel Milton... (another great artist ,find his name in my links list)Posted maybe a year or two ago I stumbled upon a great blog called The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman. It is now one of the most viewed blogs in the world and one of Time Magazines top 100 design Influencers.

Over the course of the time whenever Im having trouble with a character I know I can always go to Scotts blog and Look at the great pictures of ordinary and extraordinary people wearing the clothes that make them...well THEM. Fashion and clothing, just as art is a way of self expression.

Reading the blog over the last few months I noticed Scott was coming out with a book of the same title of the blog. So I went to the store and picked up a copy and was blown away with how jam packed full of pictures it is. Its a great buy for any artist, fashionista, and character designer.

As an Ode to Scott Schuman and His blog, I want to Draw as many characters from this book as possible. Now it would be great to draw all of them as they all deserve to be drawn.... but Im not going to make any promises here and now. lets just see what happens shall we...

So i have been trying some new things with my life drawing sessions. Im trying to add more character design to them and Im also trying more with perspective. I would like to be able to force perspective when I want or when I feel it is needed for the pose or the story. Its a great challenge and I know it will only make me draw better.

Yesterday was the World Wide Sketch Crawl. A bunch of us drew here in San Francisco and man was it a blast. There was a great turn out and a few good friends from China also got to experience it for the first time. It was a great coincidence that the Chinese Moon festival was going on at the same time.

Heres what I drew.. or should I say painted. Now I dont usually use Acrylics but i have been making an attempt lately to use them more. So I bought one of those really dinky kids sets and went at it. I learned a lot and can say that I will be doing lots more with them in the future. Probably some better ones though. hehe

Heres a couple drawings I did yesterday. I was having a fun weekend with Daisy's family and really just wanted to get away from drawing people or characters for a bit.
I have been seeing these type of van/trucks around and was kind of intrigued by them. Im not sure what they are called but if you do ... let me know.

GHOST PIRATES OF VOOJOO ISLAND!!

Hey Guys -

I have some exciting news for you all. The trailer for "Ghost Pirates of Voojoo Island" is out!!!

I did some character design and character animation for the game. Its looking great and cant wait till its released. Its a Bill Tiller game, made by the guys at Autumn moon Ent.

But the exciting part is that one of the shots that I animated is on the trailer!!
I know, not the biggest deal, but if you look at about the 59 second mark you can see a shot of the character Poppa Doc casting a spell. Yep... I did the animation for that and I think it was the second shot I animated while working at Autumn Moon. Yipeee!

Cogswell Summer camp!

These first ones are just 30 sec gestures. After that they range from 3 minutes to 5 minutes.

We Even got to draw a pirate!!!

On the last day we talked about heads for a bit and Heres one of my head drawing demos.

I was teaching a clothed figure drawing summer camp for High school students last week at Cogswell Polytechnical college in Sunnyvale CA. It went over pretty well and was definitely surprised by the speed at which they picked it up. Never underestimate young minds!!

Over the week we went went through the GCAT method (Gesture, construction, anatomy, and technique). The days were 8 hours long so we really had a great time drawing, talking about art, and just plain ol getting to know each other.

Heres a bit of what I drew. Some are Demos for the class and some are just me drawing for fun.

Café au lait?

This is an ode to an old stuffed animal. When I was a kid I went to a grocery store with my dad (who's name is also Fabian) and we saw a basket full of different stuffed animals, which all had different names on their tag. One in particular was named Fabian Fox. Seeing a stuffed animal with our name on it my dad and I couldn't pass up the offer. The special thing about the animals was that you could squeeze them and they would have a special saying. Fabian Fox's special saying was (in a sexy latin voice) "Would you like a Café au lait?" How Crazy is that?!?

Now, my guess at why I love drawing at coffee shops so much is probably because of this funny stuffed fox who kept offering me Café au lait in such a seductive manner.

Now in my ripe age of 25, I can say that I am drinker of coffee and cant get by a day without it. Heres to you Fabian Fox.

Recently I have been doing lots of drawing for work. Its great stuff that I would love to show one day. Thankfully great projects and great directors are a breeze to work through. When I have the opportunity to run wild with my designs its so fun! There is no better joy. But Once the characters are tied down and one starts to draw them more and more... it can get somewhat hypnotizing. Am i right?

To that I say... get some fresh air!! Go for a walk and draw for yourself at a nearby coffee shop!

I did a page of drawing after work today and it felt so refreshing to just pick random shapes out of the air and fill 'em in.

Boxing for a cause...

So, I know its been a while since I've posted.... Im sorry. I got a job as an animator for Autumn moon entertainment, working on their latest game. The job is pretty much over but man was it a ever a learning experience! It was major crunch time when I first got hired on. The hours were long but the work was far more fun than I could have hoped for. THe team, was only a few people but we worked together very well. Thanks to Bill Tiller for giving me the opportunity to do some 3D animation for you!

Heres a link showing some screenshots of the game! Theres also some concept work there that you can see. Im not sure who did most of the designs, but i did 3 of the ones that are shown.

My goal is to one day become an animator at a major studio. 2D or 3D... Whichever way the wind blows. So on that note, Ill be updating my animation blog more often to pursue my goal. But keep checking back... Here and on my thesis page where I will start positng some artwork and beginging storyboards that I have been working on.

Hey guys, so Super-con was pretty relaxing. Hehe. I was hoping for more of a turn out but I think the weekends heat kept everyone indoors. Ah well, I met some great people and got to talk to some amazing artists like Francisco Herrera, and Sean "Cheeks" Galloway and a few more which i cant remember off the top of my head. (sorry)

Also I went out drawing last night and wanted to put to use some tips that Cheeks hooked me up with on coloring my stuff digitally.
