Hello 2013

Hello from my first post of 2013! 

2012 was a big year.  And 2013 will be a helluva lot bigger!  For a quick recap; last year I was pretty much working 2 jobs.  I was working at Idle games for most of the year, and during the evenings and weekends I was keeping myself busy working on a video production company that I started with my long time friend Darryl Kirchner. That time was a great learning experience.  I learned a lot about myself, my future goals, and how to get to where I wanted by taking small risks and making sure they turned out positive. By all means, it was not easy. But I got through it. 

Later in the year I was let go from my position at Idle only to find another job at another game company 3 DAYS later.  I quickly felt lucky to have found work so fast.  But that's when I asked myself what I really wanted.  I want to tell stories, to make films, and to inspire people with animation, film, design, and anything in between and beyond.  Was I doing that at my new job?  No.  So I thought long and hard about my options. I eventually left the company the day I got back from Thanksgiving break. It was one of the hardest things I have done in my life.  It wasn't the act of quitting that scared me, but the fact that I was giving up a comfortable pay check and a steady job that I checked into every day and checked out of every night.  Would I succeed in a world of freelance and starting my own business?  I had no idea, but I would die a bitter old man if I never had the guts to find out. So that's where I'm at now.  

Since I started this life as a freelancer, I have worked with some great people and learned a TON about the things that feel most passionate about.  The road ahead is looking great.  I cannot WAIT to let you guys in on the things that have been happening behind the scenes with our company. Exciting things are ahead, so stay tuned. 

And with that, I'm back baby!

This is a clip that I shot during the making of my letterpress poster that I designed based off of the 7 original hills in San Francisco. For the poster I created original ‘logos’ for each of the hills based on it’s landmark feature. Can you guess the hills?

Comic Con is Here!

Hey guys, Just wanted to let you guys know that I'll be exhibiting at this years Comic Con Convention in San Diego.  It's my third time doing the show and I am really excited about it this year.  Come stop by my booth, number F-08.  It's  near the back wall with all the exhibitors (non movie studios) ;)   I'll have my 2 books, Sketch or Die and Animating in the Nude available along with some new prints and some new animation to show you if you feel like taking a peek. :)

Live Review: Boys Noize at the Mezzanine in San Francisco

A masterminded  DJ set, sweat, and molly: ingredients for a great night apparently.  The crowd at the Mezzanine on thursday night was a mixed up bag of young kids on Molly (MDMA) and game developers from near and far that were in town for San Francisco’s Game Developers Conference.  The show was actually sponsored by the developer of Minecraft, a free online game.

Boys Noize brought the house down and gave everyone a reason to dance.  One thing that I noticed after looking at my photos from the show was the intense amount of concentration and focus that Alexander Ridha had though out the set.  Bringing on and mixing the tracks and even on the switchboards his attention is on the music as it should be.  But as focused as he was he never forgot about the crowd, throwing up his arms and even dancing with the mass in front of him. It looks like he enjoyed the night just as much as we did.

I admit, i am not that great at keeping up with the photo a day/ drawing a day challenge.  but i try.  I am all caught up now and am proud of this one.  I feel like a am getting better at layouts and things like this.   I am challenging myself to keep it up.  We'll see how it goes. :)

So i use the Instagram iphone app a lot.  They have a monthly photography project.  I am joining in.  but the catch is that I will be Drawing the topic everyday and photographing my drawing.  Here is Feb 1-3.
