Walt Stanchfield And Drawing For Animation at Cogswell College

A book by Walk Stanchfield has recently been literally put into my hands by a good friend.  

I remember going online and seeing this great book and wishing i could print it without emptying out my ink cartridge or paper supply.  Alas I have a hard copy and its chalk full of Great drawings! These are not ordinary Drawings either... THey are full of life and energy, and the touch of a man who really got down to the emotion of the pose and sketch and didnt bother with the details of the person he was drawing.  If you are an animator you must have this book!  Thats all there is to it.  

It taught me about the essence.  When Drawing to get the essence of the pose I learned to minimize my lines and emphasize on gesture and feeling.  That it... It may sound easy but its not.  It takes a great deal of observation to get the essence of a pose.  

I recently also have just received word that I will be teaching Drawing for Animation 1 and 2 at Cogswell College in Sunnyvale, CA in the spring.   I am very excited about this opportunity and cant wait to get in and start drawing with people who want to learn.  

I hold this book close to me will base a lot of my class on it.  Along with Walts book, Ill  be focusing on  some quick study poses, lite anatomy, character development...and much more!  If your interested in learning about "The art of the Essence"  contact Cogwell College and Register now!

Zebra Creature Thumnail

I drew this creature in PS3 pretty fast.  Its for my creature design class.  I will be cleaning it up and bring it to a final drawing very soon.  When Im finished ill post it up.  

Seeing Stripes

So our next project is to study an animal from the Equine Family.  I am going to sudy the zebra.  Here are a couple sketches, one from reference of zebras, and another of a creature thumabnil i was working on, but not my final creature design. 

Bulldog Creature

Here is what my bulldog Creature looks like.  I know its cheesy but I  thought it would be cool to mix a Bull with a Bulldog.    Also here are the side views of the Bulldog. With the Muscles and the bones.  OLE

My Favorite dog is a bulldog.  So with our creature design class I had to do this project.  First the dog then the muscles, then the skeleton.  I learned a lot about animal anatomy doing these drawings.  Its all things I have learned before but this time around they just seemed to resonate with me... Hopefully forever.  Next I must create a creature based on the bulldog. Ill post those sometime this weekend. 

More from the clothed figure...

Here Is some clothed figure stuff. This man was a pretty great model, and when i say great i mean that he was comfortable with what he was doing...he fell asleep during a couple poses, but hey, at least he didnt move!  He also had a funny look about him.  I tried to caricature this slightly (my teacher doesnt like me to exaggerate  too much).  

But here he is.  

Dog Show Sketches

Im taking a creature design Class with Joe Weatherly here at the Academy that Im really excited about. Our First field Trip we went to the Marin County Dog Show. It was pretty cool...I had never been to a dog show, and had only seen them on TV. It so funny to see all the dogs and the character they have! But then the owners are just as fun to watch. People were cheering for the winners as if they had just scored a touchdown... and some were really depressed that their horribly behaved dog did not win first Place. I would love to go back and recommend anyone who loves dogs or quick sketching try and attend a dog show.

Clothed Figure Drawing

Here are a few Examples of my work from clothed figure drawing. Its only day 2 and i am seeing some improvement in my work. In class we are doing 3-20 minute poses. This is new to me because I am so used to drawing fast that i get impatient around the 7 minute mark. But i think since ill be trying to slow down a bit I will see some improvement with my proportions because i will have the time to fix them and perfect them. THey have always been something I struggle with while drawing the figure. Ill post more of these, hopefully on a weekly basis.
