Censorship at my school. I was informed this morning that my piece (Titled - Taxi Driver) would not be making it into the Senior Gallery this month because of its depiction of a man holding a gun and shooting someone. Surely this was done by the school to give respect to the students at Virginia Tech. I understand greatly the importance and seriousness of this matter and that we as Americans must show that we care and respect those that were involved whether they are still here with us or not.
But where I stand today, with fear of being called insensitive and immature, I truly disagree with my work being forbidden to be shown.
33 - That's the number of people whose lives were taken during this horrific event at VTech. Its very sad to say and even compare but that's only a fraction of the number of fatalities that the US has lost with our presidents war in Iraq. This month alone there has been 81 Us. Military casualties, in the Last six months there has been a total of 516 deaths. These numbers that i present to you are ONLY casualties form the US. There are many more from other countries dying every day as well. But how come This hasn't hit us as hard? Is it because its on our own soil and not in another country like Iraq. I wonder if i painted a great impressionistic painting of a tank about to demolish a small village, would that be put up? It might, probably because its an issue that we are aware of and need to do something about. Its about raising concern for an issue. Here in my painting, there is no direct relationship to the shootings at Vtech, but it still is possible for a piece like this to raise awareness of an issue. We must all act. And Censoring students work like this is not the way to go about it. That's all I have to say for now. Sorry, and I must go.
